Home-screen widgets (Android)

Put RightNow on your Android home screen: today's capacity, the task to do now, and ticking tasks off without opening the app.

RightNow has a set of widgets for Android home screens. There aren’t any for iPhone yet.

Add a widget

  1. Long-press an empty part of your home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Find RightNow and pick a widget. Drag it into place, or tap Add.

The wording varies a little between phone makers.

After installing an update that adds widgets, open RightNow once before you use them, so they have something to show and their ticks work.

The widgets

Capacity bar. A strip with today’s capacity bar, how much is free (for example “1h 25m free” or “35m over”) and how many tasks are left. The bar is the same as the one in the app: a block for each task, with calendar time as one block at the start. If more is planned than fits, the bar squeezes everything in, a dashed line marks your capacity, and the part past it is red. Make it a little taller to also see what’s planned and when your work day ends.

Over by. What you’ve planned set against the time left before your work day ends. The big number is how much you have to spare, or how far over you are. Underneath it says what’s planned, how long is left, and when the day ends. It needs working hours set; with a fixed capacity it compares against that instead.

Right now. The task to do now: your active task, or the top of Today. Tap the checkbox to complete it and the next one takes its place. Make it taller to see the capacity bar too.

Right now + day. Right now with more around it: the task to do now, how many more are pending today, and the capacity bar.

Today. Today’s tasks with checkboxes, under the capacity bar. Tap + to add a task.

Add a task. One button that opens the add bar.

Right now, smart. Changes through the day to show whatever matters most at that moment: a meeting that’s on or about to start, how far over you are, your most important task, a short task that fits before your next meeting, a repeating task with a streak to keep, a tidy-up in the last hour of your work day, and what you got done once it’s over. A label at the top says which it’s showing.

Next gap. Your next calendar event, how long until it starts, and the first task on Today that fits in the free time before it. During an event it shows when it ends. With no events left it uses the time until your work day ends. Tap the checkbox to complete the task.

Day ends in. A live countdown to the end of your work day, with what’s free and the capacity bar. It needs working hours set.

Done today. How many tasks you’ve finished today and how long they took, with a bar of done against still to do.

Streaks. Your repeating tasks, with a square for each of the last 7 days (14 if you make it wide), filled on the days you did them. The number at the end is the current streak.

Tidy up. How many tasks haven’t been touched for a month, with a button that starts a Keep or Delete round.

Games. Every refinement game, one tap each. Duplicates only appears when RightNow has found some.

There’s also a small widget for each game on its own: Mixed Deck, This or That, Keep or Delete, Duration Game, Make it Doable, Priority Game and Duplicate Finder.

Tapping anywhere else on a widget opens Today.

Ticking tasks off from a widget

Tap a task’s checkbox. It disappears straight away and its time goes back to the bar. The app saves it in the background, the same as completing it in the app, so a repeating task is logged as done and moves to its next date.

If you’re offline, it’s saved when you’re next connected.

There’s no undo on the widget. For a one-off task, open Today, swipe right on the finished task and tap Undo.

After your work day ends

Once your work day is over, the capacity widgets switch to tomorrow: the capacity bars and Over by show tomorrow’s figures, and Next gap and Day ends in say your work day’s over. The task lists stay on today until midnight.

Keeping up to date

The widgets change as soon as anything changes in the app. While the app is closed they redraw every 15 minutes during your work day, when it ends, and just after midnight.

At midnight they move on to what you’d planned for the new day. If you haven’t opened RightNow for longer than that, they say Open the app to plan today rather than show a day that’s gone.
